Tuula Moilanen6 Dreams of an Ukiyo Beauty: Convenience woodcut 2008 23.5 x 36 cm / Edition 36

I’ve recently had the pleasure to meet Tuula Moilanen. Those of you that are heavily into Japanese woodblock printmaking (aka Mokuhanga) might know her as one of the organizers of the 1st International Mokuhanga Conference in Japan earlier this year.

If you, like me, missed out - fear not, the 2nd International Mokuhanga Conference is already in the making for 2014, so start writing applications for travel / research grants or buy a piggy bank. If you wonder what it was that you have missed out: http://woodblockdreams.blogspot.com/2011/06/mokuhanga-conference-part-2.html (by Annie Bissett).

Anyway. So I met Tuula and heard about some of the interesting projects she is involved in, showed off my endearingly bad Japanese and, later, did some research on the works she does.
Having avidly read Usagi Yojimbo years ago, I cannot not think of it all the time when I see the print pictured above. Here goes: http://comicattack.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/usagi-yojimbo-print.jpg
Would love to write more, but am up in Tampere editioning, so tired. As usual, like & reblog for printmaking love!Further reading:
